Exquisite Krobo Powder Glass Beads - Handcrafted Recycled African Trade Beads from Ghana

- Strand Length: Approximately 23 3/4" (60 cm)
- Bead Size: 12 - 13 mm in diameter
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
Each bead is crafted from recycled glass bottles and other glass items, crushed into a fine powder. This powder is then carefully poured into molds to create the distinctive beads that are 100% handmade. These beads not only represent exceptional craftsmanship but also a sustainable approach to bead making.
The Art of Krobo Bead Making
The Krobo people of Ghana have perfected the intricate technique of making recycled glass beads. This process involves crushing recycled glass into a fine powder, which is then poured into clay molds. The molds are heated in traditional kilns, and once cooled, the beads are hand-painted and polished to perfection. This age-old method not only preserves the environment but also sustains the cultural heritage of Kroboland.
Trade beads hold significant historical importance in Ghana and across Africa. They were originally used as a form of currency and to establish trade routes. Today, these beads symbolize a connection to the past, embodying the rich cultural tapestry of the African continent.
