About Baule Cloths
Baule cloths are traditional textiles of the Baule people, hand‑woven on horizontal treadle looms in Côte d’Ivoire. Using narrow‑loom strips sewn together, each cloth features symbolic patterns geometric motifs, stylized flora, and symbolic emblems that convey status, identity, and proverbs within Baule culture.
The weave employs cotton dyed with earthy madder and indigo tones. Natural motifs such as the “cross” signifying unity or “zigzag” representing life’s journey imbue each piece with meaning.
Historically worn by women during ceremonies and daily life, Baule cloths also served as dowry textile and community marker. Today they remain culturally significant in Ivory Coast and are treasured by collectors globally as art, wall hangings, or elegant drapery.
Combining aesthetic charm, cultural depth, and artisanal excellence, this cloth is a testament to the enduring legacy of Baule weave traditions.
