Adinkra Sankofa Symbol African Cloth Ghana hand stamped 1

Nice green cotton ground "Man" wrapper Adinkra ( Ashanti, Akan ) cloth from Ghana West Africa.

The size of the cloth is 120" x 82'' ( 305 cm x 208 cm ) and is in very good condition with only few stains and some wear due to age and usage.

The cloth dates from the 1960s.

The artist used a variety of stamping blocks ( Adinkra symbols ) to give a nice design.

Among the Adinkra symbols that show on this cloth are:

Adinkra cloths are used in Ghana for centuries.

The cloth is hand painted and hand embossed and is embroidered together.

The stamping blocks are carved from Calabash.

The natural dye is made from the bark of the "badie" tree that is heated with iron slag for 3 to 5 days until is thick.

Adinkra symbolism come from ADINKERA that was a famous king of GYAMAN ( Now Ivory Coast ) that entered into was with Asantahene BONSU-PANYIN.

The reason of the war was that Adinkera tried to copy the Golden stool of the Ashantis. Adinkra is an ASHANTI ( ASANTE ) ( Ghana, Kumasi , West Africa ) Ceremonial cloth.

In the present days is still used as a cloth in Ghana but is also used by collectors of African cloths and African artifacts as Wall hanging or sofa covering!
