How It’s Made & Cultural Significance
This Adinkra stamping block is handcrafted from the hollowed bottom of a dried calabash gourd. The handle a wooden or cane peg is securely affixed to the back and wrapped with cloth for a comfortable grip. The stamp surface is gently curved, allowing dye to be applied smoothly in a rocking motion.
Traditionally, artisans use a natural dye made by boiling the bark of the “badie” tree with iron slag over 3–5 days until it thickens into a rich, earthy pigment. This unique dye is essential to the authenticity of traditional Adinkra stamping, though modern inks may also be used.
Adinkra cloths originated with the Ashanti and Gyaman people of Ghana and Ivory Coast. A legend recalls King Nana Kofi Adinkra of Gyaman, who was captured and brought to Kumasi, wearing distinctive patterned cloth a sign of royal sorrow and cultural identity. Those patterns evolved into the symbolic Adinkra motifs used in cloth worn by chiefs, royalty, and priests for funerals and ceremonial occasions. Today, Adinkra cloth is embraced worldwide as a meaningful expression of heritage and artistry.
