Donno Ntoaso - Adinkra Symbol “Talking Drum” | Adinkra Stamping Block from Ghana

Discover the Donno Ntoaso Adinkra stamping block - the “Talking Drum” symbol of poetic eloquence, carved in Ghana. This authentic Ghana Adinkra stamp is perfect for traditional Adinkra cloth stamping using rocking-motion dye application. Whether you're a textile artist or collector, this is a beautiful symbol of voice, rhythm, and communication.

  • Overall height (with handle): 3 1/16″ (77 mm)
  • Stamping motif size: 3 1/8″ × 1 9/16″ (79 mm × 40 mm)

The “Donno Ntoaso” design represents poetic eloquence and the power of the talking drum in Akan culture used historically to convey messages, rhythms, and story. Poets and griots would use the drum to carry news across distances. A proverb from Ghana: “Obi nkyerɛ obi takyerɛ dua” – words spoken with rhythm carry further, just like the drum.

Each stamp is carved from the bottom of a calabash (gourd), with a slightly curved face that allows dye to be applied with a smooth rocking motion. The handle is crafted from cane or wood pegs attached to the back of the gourd and wrapped in cloth for a comfortable grip. The stamping face is curved to create clean, expressive prints using natural dye derived from the bark of the badie tree.

Craftsmanship & Cultural Heritage

These traditional Adinkra stamping blocks are handmade in Ntonso, Ghana, using time-honored techniques passed down through generations. The gourd base provides a resilient and slightly springy surface, while the cane handle offers balance and control. The cloth wrap ensures comfort and stability during extensive stamping sessions. Adinkra stamping holds deep cultural significance: originally reserved for royal court and funerary cloths, it is tied to the legacy of Nana Kofi Adinkra of Gyaman. The symbolic patterns expressed ancestral wisdom, spiritual values, and communal identity. Today, Adinkra cloth is worn by all Ghanaians on special occasions, a beautiful blend of history, art, and daily life.
