Handmade African Trade Beads: Mixed Krobo Glass and Brass Strand
This stunning 26.5" strand showcases a vibrant mix of Krobo glass beads and Ashanti brass beads, meticulously handcrafted in Ghana, West Africa. Inspired by old Venetian Fancy trade beads, these recycled glass beads are full of history and culture, making each piece truly unique.
- Strand length: 26.5 inches (67 cm)
- Bead size: 7-20 mm in diameter
Each glass bead is made by the talented artisans of Kroboland using centuries-old techniques. Recycled bottles and discarded glass are crushed into a fine powder, placed into hand-carved molds, and baked in traditional clay kilns. The result? Beautifully colorful beads with authentic textures and patterns, designed to mimic the beloved Venetian Fancy beads of the past.
Complementing the glass are exquisite brass beads made in the Ashanti region (Kumasi) using the revered lost wax casting technique. Every brass bead starts as a wax model, which is carefully encased in clay. Once the mold is fired, the wax melts away and molten brass is poured in. The mold is destroyed to extract each unique bead no two are ever alike.
Trade beads have long played an important role in African history, particularly in Ghana, where they were once used for barter, storytelling, and ceremonies. Today, they remain a symbol of cultural pride and artisanal mastery. This strand is a rich fusion of Ghanaian tradition and craftsmanship, ideal for collectors, designers, or anyone passionate about African heritage.
