The glass beads are meticulously crafted in the Krobo region of Ghana using a time-honored method. Locals recycle discarded glass bottles and other items by crushing them into powder. This powdered glass is then carefully placed into hand-made clay molds. Natural dyes and patterns are added before firing in traditional kilns, creating colorful beads with deep cultural resonance.
Accompanying these are the brass beads made in the Ashanti region (Kumasi), using the remarkable lost wax casting technique. For each individual bead, a wax mold is shaped by hand. This mold is encased in clay and fired melting away the wax and leaving a cavity that’s filled with molten brass. Each mold is broken open to retrieve a single, unique bead, making every piece truly one-of-a-kind.
African trade beads like these have long been a symbol of identity, wealth, and exchange across the continent. In Ghana, beads mark significant life events and represent continuity and culture. This strand is a celebration of that heritage blending vibrant design with historical craftsmanship.
