About Ashanti Kente Cloth
Ashanti Kente (also known as Ghana Ashanti Kente) originated in the 17th century and is traditionally worn by royalty and for significant ceremonies. Each pattern and color conveys profound messages: black for spiritual strength, gold for royalty and wealth, green for growth, blue for harmony, red for passion, and white for purity.
The cloth is handwoven on a horizontal treadle loom in narrow strips, then meticulously stitched side‑by‑side. Materials vary from cotton and rayon to rare silk cloths, often reserved for special occasions or elite use.
Among the Ashanti people, Kente is worn during rites of passage, festivals, and social events. The designs are distinct from Ewe Kente: Ashanti patterns tend to feature bold squares and rectangles with symbolic names, whereas Ewe Kente includes more intricate, repeating geometric motifs.
Today, this timeless textile remains essential in Ghanaian culture and coveted worldwide by collectors. It serves not only as clothing but also as artistic heritage in museums and homes.
