Fancy African Trade Beads | Recycled Krobo Powder Glass Beads from Ghana

Introducing a stunning strand of NEW powder glass African beads, handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland (Ghana, West Africa). These exquisite beads are inspired by historic Venetian FANCY trade beads, showcasing a vibrant blend of tradition and artistry.

Product Details:

  • Strand Length: Approximately 24 1/2 inches (62 cm) of beads
  • Bead Size: 10 mm in diameter
  • Material: Recycled glass bottles and other glass items
  • Origin: Kroboland, Ghana, West Africa
  • Technique: Handmade using traditional Krobo methods

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Craftsmanship and Technique

The people of Kroboland have perfected the traditional technique of powder glass bead making, a skill passed down through generations. Recycled glass bottles and other discarded glass items are carefully ground into a fine powder. This powder is then poured into handmade clay molds, where a cassava leaf stem is placed to form the hole. The molds are fired in specialized earthen kilns at high temperatures, where the glass powder fuses to create a solid bead. After firing, the beads are cooled, washed, and often polished to achieve their final luster.

Intricate Decoration

What truly sets these fancy beads apart is the intricate decoration process. Artisans meticulously use additional powdered glass and natural dyes to hand-paint detailed patterns onto each bead. Wooden and metal tools are used to etch delicate motifs, creating vibrant and unique designs. This technique results in a kaleidoscope of colors and textures, making every bead a miniature work of art.

Firing and Finishing

Once decorated, the beads are fired again in a kiln to permanently set the colors and designs. The intense heat fuses the powdered glass and ensures the durability and brilliance of each bead. The finished beads are then carefully strung to create beautiful, authentic strands that celebrate Africa’s rich trade bead heritage.

Powder glass beads like these are more than jewelry components; they are cultural artifacts that echo the vibrant history of African trade, artistry, and sustainability.
