These vibrant Ghana glass beads are created from crushed recycled bottles and window glass. The powdered glass is poured into hand-carved clay molds, then decorated with natural dyes and pigments. Each mold is carefully designed to replicate traditional styles and historical trade bead patterns. The Krobo people use a technique known as the “core design” or “mold-inlaid” method a centuries-old process passed down through generations. After molding, the beads are fired in a clay oven, cooled, and hand-polished. This sustainable, artistic process honors the past while empowering local artisans. Powder glass beads, also known as recycled beads, sandcast beads, and Krobo beads, are integral to Ghana’s bead-making heritage. Used in traditional ceremonies, rites of passage, and daily adornment, they also held economic and symbolic importance throughout African trade history.
