Translucent Krobo Glass Beads: Recycled Ghanaian Artistry
Discover the beauty and heritage of these exquisite Krobo glass beads, handcrafted by the talented artisans of Kroboland, Ghana. These beads, imitating old Venetian glass trade beads, are a testament to the intricate craft and cultural significance of bead-making in West Africa.
- Strand Length: 21 1/4" (54 cm)
- Bead Size: 13 - 14 mm in diameter
Each bead is meticulously made from recycled glass, including bottles and other glass items, which are crushed into a fine powder. This powder is then carefully placed into molds and fired to create the stunning beads you see here. The entire process is done by hand, ensuring each bead's unique character and quality.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
The technique used by the Krobo people is both an art and a sustainable practice, turning waste glass into beautiful pieces of jewelry. These beads are not only decorative but also hold significant cultural value, often used in ceremonies and as symbols of wealth and status throughout Africa.
Trade beads have played an essential role in African history, facilitating trade and cultural exchange across the continent. Today, they continue to be cherished for their beauty and historical significance.
