About Cambay Antique Agate Trade Beads
Agate beads from Cambay (now Khambhat), India, were produced by hand‑drilling and shaping fine agate stones using traditional techniques. These Cambay Agate beads became central in West African trade networks throughout the 19th and early 20th century, prized for their hardness, translucency, and the skill required to perforate them so precisely.
In Ghana and across Africa, Agate trade beads were used as currency, ceremonial items, and status symbols. Crafted by skilled artisans in India and circulated extensively, they earned legendary status in trade bead collections globally.
Each bead reflects centuries of history, from Cambay’s stone‑working heritage to the vibrant marketplaces of Africa. At TribalGH, we honor that legacy.
