Handmade African Trade Beads - Mixed Krobo Glass & Brass Beads from Ghana
Discover the timeless beauty of African trade beads with this unique strand of mixed Krobo glass and brass beads from Ghana. These colorful and authentic beads are inspired by historic Venetian fancy trade beads and are skillfully handcrafted by artisans in West Africa.
- Strand Length: 27.5" (69.5 cm)
- Bead Size: 10-14 mm in diameter
- Materials: Recycled Krobo glass beads and Ashanti lost wax brass beads
Each glass bead is made in Kroboland, Ghana, using recycled glass bottles and household glass. The glass is crushed into fine powder, poured into handmade clay molds, and baked in traditional kilns to form beautiful, textured beads. The colors and patterns imitate old Venetian fancy trade beads that once traveled Africa’s trade routes.
The intricate brass beads are produced by the Ashanti people in Kumasi, Ghana, using the ancient lost wax casting technique. A wax model is sculpted for each bead, covered with clay, and fired in a kiln. The wax melts away, leaving a mold that is filled with molten brass. Each mold is destroyed after casting, making every bead truly one-of-a-kind.
These beads not only celebrate centuries-old traditions but also reflect Ghana’s role in the legacy of African trade beads. Worn and traded for generations, beads remain vital to storytelling, ceremonies, and cultural identity across Africa.
