The Spindle Whorls—clay beads originally crafted in Mali—feature unique etched designs. These beads were traditionally used to weight spindles in the textile process, a symbol of utility and beauty. Their aged textures and earthy tones offer a rich, cultural touch to any jewelry design or bead collection.
In addition to the clay spindle beads, the strand includes colorful Krobo Glass Beads made in Krobo Land, Ghana. These are produced from recycled glass bottles ground into powder and shaped into beautiful forms that imitate antique Venetian trade beads. The strand also features several Ashanti Brass Beads, handcrafted in Kumasi, Ghana using the ancient “lost wax” casting method, where each bead is individually molded and truly one of a kind.

What are Spindle Beads?
Spindle beads—also known as African spindle beads, Mali spindle beads, or clay spindle beads—were historically used as weights in spindle whorls for spinning yarn. Over time, their beautiful etched patterns and organic forms led to their use as jewelry and ornaments. In African trade history, beads like these played a significant role as a form of currency, barter, and cultural expression. They were integral to social rituals, trade networks, and identity markers across West Africa.
Bring home a piece of African heritage with this exquisite strand of trade beads that speaks volumes of history, craftsmanship, and culture.
