Kenya Bone Beads, Batik Bone & African Trade Beads Strand

Kenya Bone Beads | African Batik Bone Beads, Powder Glass & Spindle Beads

This eye-catching 24" strand is a beautiful representation of African beadwork, featuring a mix of Kenya bone beads, vibrant Krobo powder glass beads from Ghana, and distinct spindle beads (spindle whorls) from Mali. Each bead on this strand is a symbol of cultural heritage, artistry, and tradition across East and West Africa.

The handcrafted batik bone beads from Kenya are made using cow bone, carved and dyed with the ancient wax-resist method to create bold, tribal designs. Adding a splash of color and texture are the powder glass beads from Kroboland, Ghana. These are made from recycled glass bottles ground into powder, placed into clay molds, and fired—imitating the look of antique Venetian fancy trade beads with a uniquely African touch.

Also included in this strand are spindle beads from Mali—also known as spindle whorls. These clay beads were traditionally used as tools in yarn spinning and have since become popular as decorative and collectible pieces. Their earthy texture and historical roots add another layer of authenticity to this mixed strand.

What Are Bone Beads?

Batik bone beads are traditional beads made in Kenya from cow bone. Artisans cut, shape, and polish the bone before applying wax-resist dyeing techniques to create striking geometric or tribal patterns. These beads are highly valued for their sustainable material and bold, natural aesthetics.

What Are Powder Glass Beads?

Krobo powder glass beads are made in Ghana using ground recycled glass. The glass powder is poured into clay molds and baked in kilns, forming colorful beads that closely resemble old Venetian trade beads. These beads play a vital role in Ghanaian culture—used in rites of passage, festivals, and traditional adornment.

What Are Spindle Beads?

Spindle whorl beads, or spindle beads, originate from Mali and were historically used to balance spindles during yarn spinning. Today, they’re prized for their rustic, handmade charm and are often used as statement beads in jewelry or kept as collectible cultural artifacts.

African trade beads like these have historically served as both currency and symbolic tokens across the continent, representing trade, heritage, and storytelling. This strand beautifully embodies that tradition.
