This exquisite strand features Old Venetian Drawn Beads also known as Venetian Seed Beads, Conteria beads, or tiny drawn beads, dating from the early to mid‑1900s. These were pillars of African trade bead networks and prized by collectors for their uniform shape, vibrant glass, and historical significance.

History, Value & Craftsmanship

Originating in Venice’s historic glass‑blowing districts, these Conteria drawn beads were made by drawing molten glass into extremely fine rods, then cutting into minute 2 mm lengths. This traditional technique produced highly uniform and delicate seed beads, ideal for intricate trade items.

Used extensively in African trade from the early through mid‑1900s, these tiny seed beads became currency of sorts valued not only as adornment, but as trade goods with deep cultural resonance.

Today, such strands hold significant collector appeal combining fine craftsmanship, historic provenance, and a patina of age that tells a story. Even with minor chipping, this strand maintains excellent visual integrity and collectible value.
