History & Value
These authentic Old Venetian drawn glass beads also called Venetian seed beads or conteria beads were made in Venice and widely used in African trade from the early to mid‑1900s. Each tiny bead was stretched and drawn from molten glass, cut to uniform size, and polished, often by skilled artisans in Venice’s glassmaking districts.
Their rarity, rich color, and role in historic trade give them both cultural and monetary value. As original, finely drawn conteria beads, they are highly sought after by collectors and designers alike.
How They Were Made
Traditional Venetian glassmakers heated a rod of glass until molten, then pulled it into a long, slender “drawn” tube. This tube was then cut into tiny segments, the seed beads you see before being tumbled and polished to achieve uniform shape and finish. This hand‑drawn process is what makes Old Venetian seed beads uniquely collectible.
