This strand features tiny size, blue‑striped Old Venetian Seed Glass Trade Beads, also known as Conteria Beads, Old Venetian Drawn Beads, or simply drawn seed beads. Crafted circa early to mid‑1900s for African trade, these delicate beads are a beautiful example of Venetian glasswork.
History, Value & Artisan Origin
These Conteria drawn beads were meticulously handmade in Venice, where each tiny glass bead was formed by drawing molten glass into slender tubes, cutting them to size, and polishing to the familiar uniform seed‑bead shape. The blue striped decoration reflects traditional Venetian lamp‑work techniques. As trade beads in African markets during the early to mid‑1900s, they were highly valued as currency, status symbols and decorative adornment.
Today, authentic Old Venetian Seed Beads such as these are prized by collectors and jewellery makers alike for their rarity, craftsmanship, and connection to historic trade networks.
