Old Tiny 2 mm Black Striped Venetian Seed Glass Trade Beads Strand
- Size: 2 mm diameter beads
- Strand length: approx. 24 ¼″ (61.5 cm) of beads
- Condition: Excellent overall condition
This antique strand is composed of tiny black-striped Venetian seed beads, identical to those shown in the photographs. These all‑old Venetian drawn beads (also known as Venetian Seed beads, Conteria beads, or Old Venetian Drawn beads) date from the early to mid‑1900s and were historically used in the African trade.
History, Value, and Venetian Craftsmanship
These Old Venetian Drawn beads originate from the legendary glassmaking workshops of Venice. Skilled artisans hand-drew each tiny 2 mm seed bead from molten glass, creating uniform, slender tubes that were then cut into seed‑sized lengths. The distinctive black stripe is applied either by layering or twisting glass rods, a hallmark of Venetian trade‑bead design.
Historically, these beads held high value as trade currency in Africa, prized both for their color and consistent sizing. Their collectible status today stems from both the quality of Venetian glasswork and their role in early‑mid 20th‑century trade.
With this strand, you own more than a beautiful vintage item you own a piece of glassmaking history and trade‑bead tradition.
