Vintage 1960s Fulani Kaasa (Khasa) Blanket – Mali

This authentic Kaasa (Khasa) blanket was handwoven by the Fulani (Peul) people of Mali in the 1960s. Crafted from hand-spun sheep’s wool blended with cotton, it is a traditional Saharan textile made for warmth and protection against the cold desert nights and mosquitoes.

  • Size: 107 1/2" x 54 3/4" (273 cm x 139 cm)
  • Materials: Hand-spun sheep’s wool with cotton
  • Weave: Five narrow warps sewn together to form a single large blanket
  • Condition: Good vintage condition with a few holes, worn areas, minor stains, and age-related wear

Cultural Significance

The Kaasa blanket is an important part of Fulani daily life. In addition to providing warmth during cold nights, these blankets serve as mosquito protection when used as covers. They are traditionally woven by skilled artisans using horizontal looms, with each warp strip meticulously stitched together to create a sturdy, durable textile.

In Fulani culture, blankets like this are valued for both their utility and the skill they represent. The weaving process involves spinning wool by hand, sometimes blended with cotton for added softness, and weaving it into long strips. These strips are then carefully sewn together, creating a textile that is both functional and decorative.

Heritage & Collectability

Today, vintage Kaasa blankets are appreciated by collectors, interior designers, and lovers of African textile art. Their neutral yet textural aesthetic makes them suitable for use as bed covers, throws, or display textiles. This particular example carries the warmth of tradition, the artistry of its makers, and the history of the Sahara region.
