About This Handwoven Ashanti Kente Cloth

Ashanti Kente cloth, originating from the Ashanti (Asante) people of Ghana, dates back to the 17th century. Woven in horizontal strips then stitched together, each cloth is a visual narrative. The Sika Futuro design “Gold Dust” symbolizes wealth, royalty, and spiritual purity.

Design & Symbolism

  • Silk Weave: Uses rare natural silk (not rayon), lending irrevocable luster and prestige.
  • Motifs: Feature traditional symbols representing ethics, oral history, and moral values.
  • Colors: Rich gold/pale tones symbolizing prosperity; accented with symbolic colors for unity and life.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Handwoven with silk threads, each cloth takes several weeks to months to complete. Silk is rarer than cotton or rayon, and only the finest weavers from Kumasi create such exquisite works.

Use & Cultural Significance

Ashanti Kente is ceremonial attire worn at celebrations and rites, deeply embedded in Ghanaian tradition. Today, it’s prized by collectors and interior decorators alike for wearing, wall display, or décor.

Why This Major Difference from Ewe Kente

Ashanti Kente originates from Kumasi and tends toward bold symbolic motifs and vibrant color contrasts; Ewe Kente from southeastern Ghana often features finer, linear designs and more subdued palettes. This piece celebrates the Ashanti’s royal heritage.

History of Kente Cloth

Legend traces Kente weaving to the 17th century, when Ashanti weavers drew inspiration from forest floor bamboo patterns. Over centuries, the craft evolved into a royal art form, symbolizing identity, wisdom, and social status throughout Ghana and beyond.

This authentic silk Handwoven Ashanti Kente cloth from TribalGH exemplifies rare mid‑century craftsmanship and carries deep cultural resonance. Perfect for collectors, ceremonial wearers, or décor enthusiasts.
