Goldweights, known locally as mrammou or abrammuo, were integral to the Akan people's economy, serving as standardized measures for gold dust the primary currency before colonial influence. Each weight was part of a personal set, reflecting the owner's wealth and status.
The geometric design of this weight is characteristic of earlier styles, emphasizing abstract forms over figurative representations. Such designs not only served practical purposes but also conveyed cultural values and proverbs, embedding moral and philosophical lessons into everyday transactions.
The lost wax method, or cire perdue, involves sculpting a model in wax, encasing it in clay, and then heating it to melt away the wax, leaving a cavity into which molten brass is poured. Once cooled, the clay mold is broken away, revealing a unique brass casting. This meticulous process ensures that no two pieces are identical, highlighting the artisan's skill and creativity.
Owning this goldweight offers a tangible connection to the rich history of the Ashanti people and their sophisticated trade systems. It's not only a collectible artifact but also a piece of art that tells a story of commerce, culture, and craftsmanship.
