About Ashanti Kente Cloth
Ashanti Kente originated in the 17th century among the Asante (Ashanti) people of Ghana. Woven in vibrant colors and intricate patterns, each design narrates proverbs, historical events, religious beliefs, ethical values, moral imperatives, and oral literature. Traditional weavers sometimes incorporate rare silk or rayon alongside cotton, though authentic vintage pieces are typically 100 % cotton.
The colors carry deep symbolism:
- Black: Maturity, spiritual energy, ancestral spirits
- Blue: Harmony, love, peace
- Green: Growth, harvest, renewal
- Gold/Yellow: Royalty, wealth, high status
- Red: Political passion, sacrifice, spiritual struggle
- White: Purity, cleansing rituals
Designs are symbolic too: zigzags may signify life’s twists, checkerboards represent creativity and innovation, and specific motifs carry cultural narratives.
While both Ashanti and Ewe peoples weave Kente, Ashanti patterns often feature bold geometric shapes and rich color contrasts, whereas Ewe cloths lean toward linear motifs and softer hues.
