Akoso Powder Glass Technique & Cultural Importance
The Krobo people of Ghana perfected a labor-intensive technique to create these old Ghana powder glass beads. They began by collecting crushed glass (from imported trade glass), which they mixed with natural binders. Using clay molds, they pressed the mixture into shape. Once dried, the bead was carefully reheated in traditional kilns, and while hot, artisans trailed colorful molten glass threads for decoration a method requiring immense control and expertise.
Akoso beads, also known as Old Krobo beads, became sought-after items throughout West Africa and beyond. They were used in ceremonies, exchanged in trade, and served as Status symbols. Their vibrant colors, large sizes, and distinctive decoration signified wealth, power, and cultural identity. Today, these treasures embody both artistic mastery and a deep connection to Ghana’s cultural heritage.
Each bead is a testament to centuries-old traditions and the global reach of West African artistry.
