About Asafo Flags (Frankaa Flags)
The Asafo flags also called Frankaa flags were created for the Fante warrior companies (Asafo companies) in Ghana’s Gold Coast. Each appliqué flag symbolized the strength, unity, and bravery of a company during wartime or ceremonial duties.
These flags featured bold symbols, often depicting historical or allegorical themes. When a new Asafo Captain was installed, during funerals, or at festivals, the Frankaa was hoisted high, announcing the company’s pride. Before independence, many designs incorporated elements of the Union Jack later replaced by the Ghanaian tricolor to reflect national identity.
Crafted from imported cloth and sewn in Cape Coast workshops, these appliqué works encapsulate a blend of African tradition and colonial-era materials. Today, they continue to stand as vibrant testaments to Fante artistry, community strength, and cultural resilience.
Own more than art own history. This Fanti war flag is more than décor; it’s a living artifact of Ghana’s Asafo legacy.
