About the Asafo Flag
Asafo flags (Asafo Frankaa, Fante war flags or Asafo company flags) were essential banners of the Akan Asafo companies. These paramilitary brotherhoods of young Fante men defended their communities sometimes against Asante incursions. Over centuries, Asafo Frankaa came to symbolize unity, pride, and communal identity.
The flags feature intricate appliqué techniques: layers of colored cloth sewn by hand and machine into narrative or emblematic designs. Each motif often tells a story, honors a leader, or denotes an Asafo company’s spirit.
Used in key ceremonies such as the installation of Asafo Captains, festivals, funerals, and other communal rites these flags were once flown over forts and town centers. After Ghana gained independence (1957), their design evolved: several replaced colonial symbols with the new Ghanaian tricolor.
Our collection sources these works directly from Ghana’s master flag‑makers. They include both vintage and contemporary pieces, all using imported cloth and traditional stitching methods. Each Asafo Frankaa is more than décor it’s a vibrant emblem of African art, craftsmanship, and cultural memory.
Perfect for collectors, curators, and anyone seeking a meaningful statement piece that bridges art and heritage.
