About Baule Cloth

Handwoven on narrow looms, Baule cloths are crafted from cotton and sometimes blended with silk threads. The intricate patterns diamonds, zigzags, crosses, and stylized flora carry symbolic meanings: diamonds for fertility and abundance, zigzags for life’s journey, crosses for crossroads and unity. These symbols connect the wearer or viewer to Baule heritage and spiritual values.

Traditionally, Baule textiles were wrapped by women as fashionable garments or used during ceremonies and social gatherings. Beyond everyday wear, they held ceremonial value adorning grooms, brides, elders, and serving as important gifts.

Originating in the early 20th century, the Baule cloth tradition in Côte d’Ivoire is a testament to regional creativity. Weavers from Bondoukou, Divo, and Abidjan preserved ancestral techniques, ensuring that every narrow loom cloth carries the legacy of Baule craftsmanship, lineage, and storytelling.

This vintage cloth is not only a visual delight but also a cultural vessel perfect for collectors, museum displays, or anyone wishing to incorporate authentic Baule artistry into their home.⠀
