About Baule Cloth
Baule cloth (also known as Baule textiles or Ivory Coast African artisan textile) hails from the Baule people of Côte d’Ivoire. Crafted on narrow horizontal treadle looms, master weavers create narrow strips each strip meticulously woven and then sewn together into full-size cloths. These handwoven fabrics often feature traditional symbols such as zigzags, diamonds, and animal motifs each reflecting social status, cultural stories, or spiritual beliefs.
Made from cotton or cotton-blend threads, Baule cloths were historically worn as ceremonial garments, mourning attire, or celebratory dress among women and chiefs. Today, they are treasured as heirlooms, art pieces, and vibrant décor. The weaving technique has been passed down for generations, preserving the intricate artistry and communal traditions of the Baule culture.
Originating centuries ago, Baule weaving evolved through trade and cultural exchange but remains a cornerstone of Ivory Coast’s textile heritage. Its preservation supports artisan communities and honors the legacy of Baule craftsmanship.
