Stunning Mixed Krobo Glass and Ashanti Brass Beads - African Trade Beads

This exquisite strand features a vibrant mix of recycled glass and brass beads, handcrafted by skilled artisans in Ghana, West Africa. The colorful powder glass beads are created in the Krobo region, masterfully imitating the historic Venetian fancy trade beads. Interwoven with the strand are unique brass beads, each crafted using the ancient Ashanti "lost wax" technique - a testament to Ghana’s long-standing bead-making traditions.

  • Strand length: approx. 26.5" (67 cm)
  • Bead size: 8-16 mm in diameter
  • Material: Recycled glass & brass
  • Handmade in Ghana

These African trade beads are more than just decorative - they are pieces of history, culture, and artistry. The Krobo glass beads are made from recycled glass bottles and other discarded glass items. These are ground into fine powder, poured into hand-carved clay molds, and baked in traditional kilns to produce their striking hues and patterns.

The accompanying brass beads are made in the Ashanti region (Kumasi, Ghana) through the ancient lost wax casting technique. Each brass bead begins as a meticulously carved wax model, which is encased in clay. When fired, the wax melts and leaves a perfect mold, which is then filled with molten brass. This process destroys the mold after each bead is made, making every piece a true one-of-a-kind.

In Ghana and across West Africa, trade beads like these have played a vital role for centuries  used in ceremonies, as currency, and in storytelling. They are symbols of identity, craftsmanship, and cultural exchange.
