Authentic Mixed African Trade Beads - Krobo Glass & Lost Wax Brass Beads
This stunning strand of Krobo glass and Ashanti brass beads is a beautiful fusion of traditional Ghanaian craftsmanship and vibrant African heritage. Carefully handmade by artisans in Kroboland and Kumasi, Ghana, each bead is a testament to centuries-old techniques and cultural storytelling through beadwork.
- Strand Length: Approximately 26 3/4" (68 cm)
- Bead Size: 10-15 mm in diameter
- Materials: Recycled glass beads and lost wax brass beads
The recycled glass beads are skillfully crafted in Krobo using crushed bottles and old glass items. These are ground into fine powder, dyed with natural tints, and poured into clay molds. The molds are heated in kilns, where the powdered glass fuses into solid, colorful beads that mimic the look of antique Venetian fancy trade beads.
Accompanying these are intricately designed brass beads from the Ashanti region. Using the ancient lost wax casting method, each brass bead begins as a wax model, covered with clay to create a mold. Once fired, the wax melts away, allowing molten brass to fill the cavity. Each mold is destroyed to reveal one unique bead no two are exactly alike.
These recycled glass and brass beads hold deep cultural and historical significance. In Ghana and across West Africa, African trade beads have been used for centuries as currency, storytelling tools, and symbols of identity. TribalGH is proud to continue supporting this vibrant tradition of artistry and sustainability.
