About Baule Cloths

Baule cloths (also known as Baule textiles or Baule traditional cloths) are handwoven by skilled Baule weavers in Ivory Coast. Using a horizontal narrow-loom, artisans weave narrow strips of 10–15 cm wide, which are then expertly sewn together to form larger pieces.

The symbolic motifs woven into each cloth carry deep meaning geometric patterns, stylized animals, and abstract shapes reflect Baule cosmology, heritage, and everyday life. Common materials include hand-spun cotton and occasionally silk threads, naturally dyed for earthy tones.

Historically, Baule textiles were used for ceremonial attire, funerary cloths, and status garments in Ivorian society. Today, they continue as prestigious cultural artifacts and modern décor, appreciated globally for their artistry and heritage.

History & Significance
