- Bead Size: 9-17 mm in diameter
- Materials: Recycled powder glass and lost wax brass
- Origin: Ghana, West Africa
Each bead in this strand is 100% handmade, using centuries-old traditions that reflect the ingenuity and heritage of West African craftsmanship. The Krobo people of Ghana create these exquisite powder glass beads by crushing recycled bottles and glass items into fine powder. This powder is carefully poured into clay molds and baked in earthen ovens, resulting in vibrant, tactile beads that are as sustainable as they are beautiful. Complementing the glass are Ashanti brass beads, made in the Kumasi region using the revered lost wax casting technique. Each brass bead begins as a unique wax mold, which is encased in clay, fired, and melted away—leaving a perfect cavity that is filled with molten brass. No two beads are ever the same, making each strand a unique work of art. African trade beads like these have long been used for trade, adornment, and storytelling across the continent. They carry not only beauty but history, tradition, and a connection to the past. Today, these Ghana glass and brass beads continue to celebrate cultural identity and artisan skill.
