Historical and Cultural Significance

Goldweights, known as abrammuo or mrammou in the Akan language, were integral to the Ashanti economy from the 14th to the 19th centuries. They were used alongside small scales to weigh gold dust, facilitating trade and commerce. Each weight was meticulously crafted to represent specific values, and their designs often held symbolic meanings or conveyed proverbs.

The geometric patterns seen in early goldweights, such as this one, were influenced by Islamic art introduced through trans-Saharan trade routes. These designs later evolved to include more figurative elements, depicting animals, humans, and objects, each carrying cultural and moral significance.

The Lost Wax Casting Technique

The lost wax method, or cire perdue, is an ancient metal casting process that allows for intricate designs and fine details. Artisans would sculpt the desired design in beeswax, encase it in a clay mold, and then heat it to melt and drain the wax, leaving a cavity. Molten brass was then poured into this cavity. Once cooled, the clay mold was broken away to reveal the finished piece. This technique ensured that each goldweight was unique and precise in weight, essential for fair trade practices.
