About Baule Cloths

Baule traditional cloths are handmade textiles created by the Baule people of Ivory Coast, woven on horizontal treadle looms. Each narrow strip is painstakingly woven and stitched together to form large, dazzling cloths. Motifs such as geometric diamonds, crosses, and zigzags carry symbolic meaning, representing wealth, ancestry, and protection.

Materials used are typically natural cottons dyed in earthy tones or bright contrasts. Historically, these cloths were worn during rituals, festivals, and daily life, signifying status and cultural identity among Ivory Coast communities. Over time, Baule textiles have evolved from functional garments to treasured art pieces in global collections.

Today, Baule cloths are appreciated not only for their practical utility but also for their artistic value, serving as collector’s items and elegant home décor.

Own a real piece of African art – a legacy woven in threads by the women of Bondoukou.
