The Art of Krobo Fused Glass Bead Making
The Krobo people of Ghana have perfected the art of creating stunning recycled fused glass beads through a detailed and traditional process:
- Collection and Preparation: Small glass beads are collected and cleaned. These serve as the raw material for larger fused beads.
- Molding: The small glass beads are placed into molds made from clay. The molds define the shape and size of the new beads.
- Firing: The molds with the small glass beads are placed in a kiln and fired at high temperatures. This process fuses the beads together to form larger, uniquely patterned beads.
- Finishing: Once cooled, the fused beads are removed from the molds and often polished or refined to smooth out any rough edges.
These vibrant beads hold significant cultural importance in Ghana, often used in ceremonies and as symbols of status and identity.
