Introducing a beautiful strand of new powder glass African beads, skillfully made by the talented artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads elegantly imitate the classic Venetian fancy trade beads.

  • Strand Length: 26 1/4" (67 cm)
  • Bead Size: 7 - 8 mm in diameter

Each bead is crafted from recycled glass bottles and other glass items, which are ground into powder and then formed into molds to create these stunning beads. The entire process is 100% handmade, ensuring that each bead is unique and of the highest quality.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Craftsmanship and Tradition

The creation of these fancy Krobo glass beads is a testament to the skill and artistry of the Krobo people of Ghana. The process begins with gathering recycled glass, which is then pulverized into a fine powder. This powder is carefully placed into molds to form the initial bead shapes.

Detailed Decoration

What sets these fancy beads apart is the intricate decoration process. Artisans use a blend of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to craft elaborate patterns and vibrant designs. Using metal or wooden tools, they etch or paint detailed motifs onto each bead, resulting in truly unique pieces of art.

Firing Process

The decorated beads are then fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This step fuses the glass powder and sets the designs in place, giving the beads their final, durable form. The firing process not only solidifies the beads but also enhances the vibrancy of their colors and patterns.

Trade beads hold significant cultural and historical importance in Ghana and across Africa. They have been used for centuries as a medium of exchange, symbols of wealth, and markers of social status. Today, they continue to be cherished for their beauty and cultural heritage.
