Fancy Powder Glass Beads - Handcrafted Ghanaian Artistry

Discover the exquisite beauty of our African trade beads, meticulously handcrafted by the talented artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads, inspired by the elegance of old Venetian fancy trade beads, are a true testament to the rich cultural heritage and artistic excellence of the Krobo people.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 24" (61 cm)
  • Bead Size: 10 - 11 mm in diameter

Made from recycled bottles and other glass items, these beads undergo a fascinating transformation. The glass is pulverized into powder and then carefully molded to create each unique bead. The beads are 100% handmade, showcasing the incredible skill and dedication of the artisans.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The Art of Bead Making in Kroboland

The Krobo people of Ghana have perfected the art of creating fancy glass beads through traditional techniques passed down through generations. The process begins with gathering and crushing discarded glass into a fine powder. This powder is then meticulously poured into clay molds to form the beads.

What sets fancy beads apart is the detailed decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They may use metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads. The decorated beads are then fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final form.

Trade beads have played a significant role in the history and culture of Ghana and Africa as a whole. They were traditionally used as a form of currency and played an essential part in trade and social ceremonies. Today, they continue to be cherished for their beauty and cultural significance.
