Handmade Ghana Glass Beads - African Trade Recycled Glass Beads

Item number:

SKU:SB-40390

A beautiful matching strand of new African beads, made from recycled glass fused seed beads by the people of Kroboland (Ghana, West Africa). These beads are tumble rounded and polished, resulting in a smooth surface.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 23" (59 cm)
  • Bead Size: 12 mm in diameter

The beads are 100% handmade, each unique in its own way.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

These exquisite beads are created by artisans in the Krobo region of Ghana using small-sized glass beads that are fused together to form larger beads. The technique involves the following steps:

Collection and Preparation: Small glass beads are collected and cleaned. These beads are then placed into clay molds that determine the shape and size of the final beads.

Firing: The molds with the glass beads are placed in a kiln and fired at high temperatures. This fuses the small beads together into a larger bead without melting them into a homogeneous mass, resulting in unique patterns and textures.

Finishing: Once cooled, the beads are removed from the molds and often polished to smooth out any rough edges.

Krobo beads are notable for their vibrant colors and intricate patterns, holding significant cultural importance in Ghanaian society. They are often used in ceremonies and serve as symbols of status and identity.
