This elegant beaded necklace combines the translucent beauty of Krobo powder glass beads with the warm glow of handcrafted Ashanti brass beads. Expertly strung on a brown wax cord, it reflects the timeless artistry of Ghana’s bead-making traditions. The subtle mix of golden yellows, earthy browns, and matte glass gives this necklace a sophisticated, organic charm perfect for both casual and formal wear.

  • Necklace length: 26 1/2" (67.5 cm)
  • Bead sizes: Approx. 13 mm diameter (glass beads)
  • Large brass bead size: 41 x 13 mm
  • Materials: Recycled glass beads, brass beads, wax cord

YOUR NECKLACE WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE ONE SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

About the Beads

The translucent powder glass beads are made in Krobo land, Ghana, from recycled bottles and other discarded glass. The glass is crushed into a fine powder, placed into clay molds, and fired in a traditional firewood kiln. This process gives the beads their soft matte finish and natural, earthy feel.

The intricate brass beads are created in the Ashanti region using the ancient lost wax casting method. Each brass bead begins as a wax model that is encased in clay, heated to remove the wax, and then filled with molten brass. The mold is broken to release the finished bead, meaning each one is completely unique.

Cultural Significance

Both Krobo glass beads and Ashanti brass beads are deeply tied to West African history and trade. Known as trade beads, they were historically used as a form of currency, markers of social status, and symbols in ceremonies. Today, wearing such a necklace is both a celebration of African craftsmanship and a connection to centuries of cultural heritage.
