About the Colors
The palette of this necklace echoes the skies over Ghana at dusk, dusty pinks, soft peach, glowing amber, and deep sunset orange. Each disc-shaped Krobo bead has a matte finish that enhances the warmth of the tones, while the lustrous gold of the Ashanti brass beads adds a regal contrast.
Traditional Craftsmanship
The Krobo glass beads are created in Ghana’s Krobo region by crushing recycled bottles into fine powder, placing it into molds, and firing it in a firewood kiln. This traditional powder glass technique produces beads with rich, natural colors and a velvety texture.
The Ashanti brass beads are meticulously handcrafted in Kumasi using the ancient lost wax casting method. Each bead begins as a wax model, encased in clay, then filled with molten brass. Once the mold is broken to release the bead, it can never be used again, ensuring that every brass bead is truly one-of-a-kind.
Cultural Significance
For centuries, African trade beads like these have been used for currency, adornment, and cultural exchange. Wearing this necklace connects you to Ghana’s living tradition of bead-making and the deep history of craftsmanship across West Africa.
