Crafting Process and Cultural Significance
These exquisite beads are made by the skilled artisans in the Krobo region of Ghana using a unique fused glass technique. The process begins with collecting and cleaning small-sized glass beads. These beads are then placed into clay molds that determine the shape and size of the final beads. The molds with the glass beads are fired at high temperatures in a kiln, fusing the small beads together to form larger, solid beads.
Once cooled, the beads are removed from the molds and often polished to smooth out any rough edges. These fused beads are opaque and display a rich array of colors and patterns, reflecting the artisanal skills and creativity of the Krobo people.
These beads hold a significant place in Ghanaian culture, frequently used in ceremonies and as symbols of status and identity. They are a testament to the rich heritage and artisanal skills of the Krobo people.
