This exquisite Handwoven Ashanti Kente cloth was handwoven in Kumasi, Ghana in the 1970s. It is made from 100% cotton and measures:
- Size (Woman): 64 ½″ × 38 ½″ (163 cm × 98 cm)
The cloth is in very good vintage condition. As a genuine artifact, it shows minor color running, light wear, and some yellowish age‑related stains especially on the white areas, which is typical for older cotton kente.
Handloom woven on a horizontal treadle loom, the individual colorful strips were meticulously sewn together by skilled Ashanti weavers. This ceremonial textile took weeks or even months to complete, a testament to its craftsmanship.

About Ashanti Kente Cloths
Ashanti Kente (also known simply as Kente) originates from the royal courts of the Ashanti people in Kumasi, Ghana. Dating back to the 17th century, Kente has long been imbued with deep cultural meaning and ceremonial importance.
- Handwoven Tradition: Crafted on a horizontal treadle loom, each narrow strip is woven by master weavers trained in centuries‑old techniques. These strips are then sewn into larger platters of cloth.
- Designs & Symbolism: Each pattern tells a story reflecting values like unity, leadership, wisdom, and ethics. Weaving patterns serve as visual narratives of Ashanti history and philosophy.
-
Color Meanings:
- Black: maturity, spiritual energy
- Blue: love, harmony
- Gold/Yellow: royalty, wealth
- Green: growth, renewal
- Red: political and spiritual moods, bloodshed
- White: purity, cleansing rites
- Materials: While traditional Kente is 100% cotton, many weavers incorporate rayon for sheen and silk for rare, premium pieces. This piece is pure cotton, offering authentic texture and heritage value.
- Ashanti vs Ewe Kente: Ashanti (Asante) Kente typically features bold, blocky geometric patterns with strong symbolism, while Ewe Kente from eastern Ghana often uses more diagonal, smaller-scale designs with distinct regional names.
- Cultural Significance: Worn by clergy, chiefs, and dignitaries during ceremonies, Kente embodies oral literature, moral values, and social status. Today it remains a symbol of cultural pride, found in modern fashion, collector’s displays, and home décor.
Owning a vintage 1970s Ashanti Kente like this connects you to Ghana’s rich textile legacy and the hands of skilled artisans from Kumasi. A living piece of history!
