About Ashanti Kente Cloth
Ashanti Kente cloths are handwoven in Kumasi, Ghana, on horizontal treadle looms. The weaver meticulously crafts narrow strips that are later sewn together to form the full cloth a process taking several weeks to months based on design complexity and size.
Kente is far more than fabric it serves as a visual tapestry of history, ethics, philosophy, moral values, and religious beliefs. Its intricate motifs and colors each carry symbolic meaning:
- Black: Maturation, spiritual strength, and earth
- Gold/Yellow: Royalty, wealth, and high status
- Green: Renewal, growth, and fertility
- Blue: Peace, harmony, and love
- Red: Political and spiritual moods, sacrifice
Materials range from cotton and rayon to rare silk, with silk reserved for the most elite ceremonial pieces. Unlike Ewe Kente, which tends toward bolder color blocking, Ashanti Kente is more symbolic and historically steeped emerging in the 17th century within the Ashanti Empire.
These cloths were traditionally worn by kings, chiefs, and dignitaries during ceremonies. Today, they are valued both as continuing expressions of Ghanaian culture and as collectible art displayed on walls, sofas, or beds.
This vintage Ashanti Kente is a genuine piece of authentic African art perfect for cultural connoisseurs and collectors.
