About Ashanti Kente Cloth
Ashanti Kente, woven by master weavers in Kumasi, Ghana, is much more than fabric it’s a visual language. Every pattern, stripe, and color carries deep symbolic meaning, reflecting the Ashanti people’s history, ethics, oral traditions, philosophy, moral values, and spiritual beliefs. Crafted on a horizontal treadle loom, narrow strips are painstakingly woven and then expertly sewn together to form large ceremonial pieces. Depending on complexity and size, weaving such a cloth may take from several weeks to months.
Colors & symbolism:
- Gold – royalty, wealth, spiritual purity
- Green – growth, renewal, vegetation
- Black – maturity, spiritual energy, ancestral link
- Blue – peace, harmony, love
- Red – political and spiritual struggle
Materials used: Traditionally cotton; later incorporated rayon, and rarer, luxurious silk cloths reserved for royalty and special rites.
History & use: Kente cloth dates back to the 17th century and remains integral in modern Ghanaian culture worn at weddings, funerals, graduations, and festivals. Originally exclusive to Ashanti royalty, today it’s beloved by collectors and interior enthusiasts worldwide.
Ashanti vs. Ewe Kente: Ashanti (Asante) Kente tends to feature bold patterns, geometric shapes, and vibrant contrasts, often in rectangular strip layouts. Ewe Kente (from the Volta region) often uses narrower stripes, more subdued tones, and distinctive symbolic patterns. Both are rich in cultural significance but differ in weaving technique, color palette, and visual rhythm.
Own a genuine piece of Ghana Ashanti Kente steeped in tradition, symbolism, and rich cultural narrative.
