African Fancy Powder Glass Beads - 25.25" Strand, Krobo, Ghana
Introducing a stunning strand of powder glass beads, handmade by the skilled artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads are crafted to beautifully imitate the intricate patterns of old Venetian fancy trade beads, blending history with artistry in every piece.
- Strand Length: Approximately 25 1/4" (64 cm)
- Bead Size: Approximately 8-9 mm in diameter
Each bead is meticulously handmade using recycled glass bottles and other discarded glass materials. The glass is crushed into a fine powder, placed into molds, and carefully fired in kilns to achieve these vibrant, eco-friendly beads. No two beads are exactly alike, reflecting the uniqueness of this traditional Ghanaian craft.
Decoration Process
What sets these fancy Krobo beads apart is their intricate decoration. Artisans use powdered glass and natural dyes to create stunning patterns and colors. Using tools like wooden or metal sticks, they etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, ensuring every strand is rich with cultural heritage and artistic detail.
Firing Techniques
The beads are fired in a kiln at high temperatures to fuse the glass powder and solidify the designs. This traditional firing process not only ensures durability but also highlights the vibrant, authentic look of these beads.
The Significance of Trade Beads
Trade beads have played a vital role in African culture and history, used as currency, symbols of status, and objects of artistic expression. Today, they remain a cherished part of Ghanaian heritage, connecting modern artistry with ancient traditions.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
