Discover the beauty of our Authentic Ghanaian Powder Glass Beads, meticulously handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland, Ghana. These beads are inspired by the intricate designs of old Venetian fancy trade beads and carry a rich cultural heritage.
- Strand Length: 25 1/2" (64.5 cm)
- Bead Size: 10 - 11 mm in diameter
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
These stunning beads are created using a sustainable process where bottles and other glass items are ground into powder and then molded to form each unique bead. The beads are then decorated with vibrant patterns using a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes. Artisans employ metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, giving each piece its distinct character.
The decorated beads undergo a firing process in a kiln where high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, resulting in the final beautiful and durable form.
The Art of Beadmaking in Kroboland
The people of Krobo in Ghana have perfected the art of beadmaking over generations. The technique involves grinding recycled glass into a fine powder, which is then carefully poured into clay molds. These molds are heated in a kiln, transforming the powdered glass into solid, beautifully decorated beads. This craft not only preserves an important cultural tradition but also supports sustainable practices and local economies.
Trade beads hold a significant place in African history, serving as a medium of exchange and a symbol of wealth and social status. Each bead tells a story, making them a treasured addition to any collection or jewelry piece.
