Explore our stunning strand of new powder glass African beads, handcrafted by the talented artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These exquisite beads are designed to imitate the intricate patterns of old Venetian Eye trade beads, making them a unique addition to your collection.
- Strand Length: Approximately 26" (66 cm)
- Bead Size: 11 - 12 mm in diameter
Each bead is meticulously made from recycled bottles and other glass items, which are crushed into a fine powder, then molded to create these beautiful beads. The entire process is done by hand, ensuring each bead is unique.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
Production Technique
The production of these fancy glass beads is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Krobo people in Ghana. The process begins with crushing recycled glass into a fine powder. This powdered glass is then carefully poured into molds, forming the initial bead shapes.
Decoration
What sets these fancy beads apart is their detailed decoration. Artisans use a mix of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They may use metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, resulting in truly unique pieces.
Firing
The decorated beads are then fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder, setting the designs in place and giving the beads their final form. This firing process not only solidifies the beads but also enhances their vibrant colors and intricate patterns.
Importance of Trade Beads
Trade beads hold significant cultural and historical value in Ghana and across Africa. Historically, these beads were used as a form of currency and played a vital role in trade. Today, they continue to symbolize cultural identity and craftsmanship, making them highly valued by collectors and artisans worldwide.
