The result is a vibrant, textured, and sustainable piece of African heritage that showcases the elegance of sandcast beads while supporting eco-conscious production.
Traditional Technique: Mold-Inlaid Powder Glass Beads
These beads are created using the traditional "mold-inlaid" technique. This involves the use of hand-carved clay molds into which recycled glass powder is poured. Artists from the Krobo region in Ghana often embellish the beads with intricate patterns by adding colored glass inlays before firing them in a kiln. This technique also known as the “core design” method produces unique textures and layered color effects.
Trade beads have long played an important cultural and economic role in West Africa, serving as currency, symbols of wealth, and ceremonial objects. Today, they remain deeply embedded in the identity and artistry of the Krobo people.
