- Bead Size: 10-23 mm
Each bead on this strand is a work of art, created by transforming discarded bottles and glass items into fine powder. The powder is then placed into hand-crafted clay molds, often with intricate patterns or vibrant colors, before being fired in traditional kilns. The result is a beautiful variety of textures and colors that resemble the historic trade beads that once passed through African trade routes.
These African trade beads are 100% handmade and represent the eco-conscious artistry and cultural heritage of the Krobo people. Their work revives ancient bead-making traditions while contributing to sustainable craftsmanship.
About Krobo Bead Making in Ghana
The Krobo people of Ghana have preserved their ancestral art of bead making for generations. This technique begins with crushed recycled glass, which is carefully poured into molds made from termite clay. Using a cassava leaf stem to form the bead hole, the molds are then fired in earthen kilns. Once cooled, the beads are washed and polished by hand to reveal their final glow and beauty.
These recycled glass beads play an important role in African history and are more than just ornaments they serve as currency, symbols of status, and heirlooms passed through generations. At TribalGH, we are proud to support this tradition and bring you authentic, ethical African beads.
