These beads are a testament to the creativity and resourcefulness of the Krobo people. Using recycled glass fragments from bottles and other materials, the artisans follow a meticulous process:
- Collection and Preparation: Glass fragments are gathered, cleaned, and broken into smaller pieces.
- Molding: The glass is placed into handmade clay molds to shape the beads.
- Firing: The molds are fired in a kiln, fusing the glass without fully melting it, creating translucent beads with a unique variegated appearance.
- Finishing: After cooling, the beads are removed from the molds and polished for a smooth finish.
In Ghana, Krobo beads are much more than adornments; they hold deep cultural significance, symbolizing status, identity, and heritage. These vibrant beads are often used in traditional ceremonies and celebrations, making them a timeless treasure.
